England posts highest ODI total against India

PUNE: Half-centuries by Jason Roy (73), Joe Root (78) and Ben Stokes (62) helped England to score their highest ODI total against India, bettering their previous best of 338 scored at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the 2011 ICC World Cup.

England scored 350 for 7 in 50 overs, but Virat Kohli-led India overhauled the total by scoring 356 for 7 in 48.1 overs.

The only other ODI played on this ground also saw the visiting team score past 300 when Australia smashed MS Dhoni-led India to 304 before registering 72-run win on October 13, 2013.

Another 300 on the Maharashtra Cricket Association’s International Stadium indicated that the pitch here has settled well and runs could be scored unlike in the early years when even Indian Premier League T20 matches failed to produce big runs.

Between India and England, India leads the top scorer’s table with 387 runs scored in Rajkot on November 14, 2008 and before this match, it was the score of 338 in the famously tied World Cup match at Chinnaswamy Stadium that stood as second highest.

In Pune though, India played England only for the second time-the first being the maiden ODI being played in Pune, at the Nehru Stadium, on December 5, 1984.

Playing against Sunil Gavaskar-led Indian team, England had gone on to win the match by 4 wickets after India posted 214 thanks to Dilip Vengsarkar’s 105. Mike Gatting replied with 115 as England cruised to the target in 43.2 overs.
